On the road with Onderwater Flowers
The Flying Dutchman
Every single week, a truck loaded with fresh flowers and plants leaves Rijnsburg, the Netherlands, bound for the UK. Behind the wheel is Ronald Onderwater, a driver his customers have affectionately nicknamed “The Flying Dutchman.” For more than 25 years, Ronald has driven the same route across the Channel to supply loyal independent florists across the UK with fresh-cut flowers and quality plants, straight from the Dutch flower auctions.
In an industry where reliability matters as much as quality, Ronald has built something rare: a genuine, long-standing relationship with the florists he serves. This is the story of the man behind the wheel, the weekly journey he makes, and why so many UK florists have trusted him with their flower supply for over a quarter of a century.
Q&A on Instagram
Recently, one of Ronald's long-time customers put him in the spotlight with an Instagram Q&A about his profession. It's a lovely, honest glimpse into why florists across the Midlands keep coming back to him week after week: a familiar face, a driver they know and trust, and a supplier they can call at any point during the week if something needs sorting out.
That kind of trust isn't built overnight. It's the product of decades of consistency: the same driver, the same reliable delivery day, and flowers and plants that consistently meet the standard florists expect. Watch the full Q&A below to hear it straight from a florist who knows Ronald's route better than most.
Curious what's on the truck this week? The current stock is always visible online, updated in real time so florists know exactly what's available before Ronald even arrives.
A week in the life of Ronald
Delivering fresh flowers and plants to florists across the UK isn't a single trip, it's a well-rehearsed weekly cycle that starts days before the truck ever crosses the Channel. Here's what a typical week on the road looks like, from buying at the Dutch flower auctions to unloading back in the Netherlands.
-
Wed – Thu
Buying
The week begins at the flower auctions, where the stock for the truck is carefully sourced on Wednesday and Thursday. This is where quality is decided: only fresh, well-graded flowers and plants make it onto Ronald's truck, chosen with the needs of UK florists specifically in mind.
-
Friday
Loading
On Friday, everything comes together as the truck is loaded for the journey ahead. Flowers and plants are carefully packed and organised so they arrive across the Channel in the best possible condition, ready to sell straight from the truck once Ronald reaches the UK.
-
Sunday
Departure for the UK
Ronald sets off from the Netherlands on Sunday, driving down through the Netherlands and Belgium to Calais, France. From there, the truck boards the Eurotunnel Shuttle, travelling beneath the sea to reach English shores in a matter of minutes. On the other side, Ronald continues on to the West Midlands, where his weekly round of deliveries begins.
-
Mon – Tue
The tour
Once in the West Midlands, Ronald sells the truck's contents directly to the independent florists who make up his round, many of whom he has been supplying for more than 25 years. It's a face-to-face way of doing business that's become increasingly rare in wholesale flower supply, and it's exactly what keeps these florists coming back to Onderwater Flowers, week after week, year after year.
-
Tue evening
Back to Harwich
By Tuesday evening, Ronald has completed his round and arrives in Harwich, where he boards the overnight ferry back to the Netherlands, ready to start the cycle all over again the very next morning.
-
Wed morning
Unloading & starting again
Back in the Netherlands on Wednesday morning, the truck is unloaded, and within hours the buying process starts again at the flower auctions. Week in, week out, this cycle has repeated itself for more than 25 years, and it's the engine behind Onderwater Flowers' reputation as a dependable wholesale flower and plant supplier for UK florists.
What Ronald does is about far more than simply transporting flowers. For many independent florists across the Midlands, he has become a familiar and trusted face: someone who shows up week after week with fresh stock, delivered reliably and on time, without the layers of distance that often come with large-scale wholesale flower distribution.
In a trade where freshness, timing, and trust make all the difference, Ronald's weekly journey is a reminder that great wholesale flower supply still comes down to relationships built over years, not just logistics. It's why Onderwater Flowers continues to be a go-to supplier of fresh flowers and plants for florists across the UK, one truck, one route, and one Flying Dutchman at a time.
